What do you get when you release a Linux-based SDK for Skype? Skype on practically every mobile handset, and even some weird electronic devices, I hope!Instead of relying on Skype and Skype's APIs, developers and device manufacturers can use the new SkypeKit SDK to build their own Skype apps.
The SDK goes far beyond the APIs that have been publicly available thus far, and looks a lot like what Skype uses for internal development. The possibilities don't end at smartphones: Skype TVs, Skype-only cordless phones, Skype in mobile video game consoles ... seriously, someone could build a Skype-combination-subwoofer-coffeemaker! The SDK is currently more exciting to developers and electronics companies than it is to the average user, but that could change very soon.
On top of the SDK, Skype has also open-sourced its Silk audio codec, looking to turn it into a common format. That would certainly help out any app that aims to record or edit Skype conversations, and also allow other apps to take advantage of the codec for VoIP calls and more.
