It’s well known that iTunes App Store is leaps and bounds ahead of all its competitors – be it Android Market, Blackberry App World or Nokia Ovi Store. But just how big is the Apple App Store? Ever wondered what’s the total worth of all apps in the Apple App Store? According to the latest metrics provided by 148.biz, the total worth of the 250,000+ apps is nearly $673,362. And there’s plenty of reason to cheer for Apple loyalists, the iTunes Store is expanding at a record pace and the milestone of 1 million apps isn’t just a dream any longer.
Quarter Million apps is no mean achievement and it is widely believed that Steve Jobs will formally announce the same in Apple’s upcoming September 1 event. The study from 148.biz also highlights that there are another 49,696 inactive apps, which are no longer available for download. Taking the inactive apps into account, the total number of apps crosses 300,000. Compare that with Android Market which has 100,000 apps and tell me “Where’s the competition?”. Almost 74,000 (29%) apps are free while others are paid. In contrast, nearly 64% Android apps are free.
The Apple App Store has grown exponentially in the last couple of years. It took nearly 11 months to reach the 50,000 apps mark but there’s been no looking back since then. It reached the 100,000 application mark on in November 2009 and the 150,000 milestone in February of 2010. The 200,000 mark came a lot quicker than most analyst expectations in May, 2010. The App Store’s popularity has been boosted by the two new bestsellers launched by Apple this season – the iPad and the iPhone 4.
iOS is the preferred platform for mobile developers and publishers alike. Nearly 50,606 different publishers are active on the iTunes App Store. The average price for a paid app is US$2.67. The most popular iOS apps are books (43,809), games (36,719), Entertainment (28771), Education (19603) and Lifestyle (16023).
So, what’s the Apple App Store worth? What will you end up paying if you decided to purchase every single app available on iTunes? The answer is approximately $673,362. Not bad considering that nearly 83,000 apps are priced at $1 a piece.
