As we reported earlier, the SHAtter exploit discovered by an iPhone hacker @pod2g can be utilized for jailbreaking iPhone 4 and other iDevices running iOS 4.1. The iPhone Dev team has put the exploit in actual use and develop a beta version of PwnageTool to jailbreak an iPod touch (4th generation).

The team confirmed the exploit worked as expected and was enough to convince the iPod touch 4G to restore to the custom IPSW. They have put a demo video to show off the successful result (check out after the break).

But, how about iPhone 4? Will the SHAtter exploit let us jailbreak iPhone 4?

The team reassures every user that the upcoming PwnageTool will jailbreak the existing iPhone 4. As usual, the tool will preserve the baseband and you can still use the current version of ultrasn0w for carrier unlock.

Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it’s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4’s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. In any event, this is another exciting time for iPhone and iPod touch users…the cat and mouse game continues!

For those who do not heard of SHAtter, it is a bootrom-based exploit that can’t be fixed by iOS software update. The only way to close the vulnerability is to replace the bootrom at hardware level. That means, as long as you already own an iPhone 4, you can enjoy jailbreaking for your life time.

There is no confirmation for the exact release date of the next version of PwnageTool. We just know the iPhone Dev team is working hard to bring it to the public. Anyhow, we will keep you update once it is available. Stay tuned especially you’re using iPhone 4.
