I know some of you are desperately awaiting the release of jailbreak tool for iOS 4.1. Here is a good news. Not long ago, the infamous iPhone Dev team has announced the beta version of Redsn0w 0.9.6, that can be used to jailbreak iOS 4.1. As of now, the tool can only work on iPhone 3G and iPod touch (2nd generation) only. But it is expected the team will extend the support to other devices such as iPhone 3GS.

For those with jailbreaking background, redsn0w shouldn’t be new to you. Redsn0w is one of the easiest jailbreak tools for jailbreaking iPhone and iPod touch on various version of iOS.

The latest version of Redsn0w adds the jailbreak support for both iOS 4.0 and 4.1. As mentioned by the team, it uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that have been using since the firmware 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g yet.

Read it Carefully

As it is just a beta release, use it at your own risk. If you are adventurous and can’t wait any longer to jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 4.1, please read the notes carefully:

  • The redsn0w 0.9.6 beta only supports jailbreaking on iPhone 3G and iPod touch (2nd generation). If you’re not using other devices, please do not use redsn0w to jailbreak.
  • As of now, only the Mac version of redsn0w is available. The Windows version will soon be released.
  • The redsn0w 0.9.6 beta is designed for jailbreak iOS 4.0 or 4.1.
  • If you have an “MC” model of the iPod touch (2nd generation), your 4.1 jailbreak will be tethered.

Don’t Use Redsn0w if You need Unlocking

Most importantly, if you are relying on ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G, you should NOT use redsn0w. By using redsn0w, you are required to upgrade to iOS 4.1 via iTunes and that will kill the ultrasn0w unlock. So please just stay away from using redsn0w jailbreak and wait for another jailbreak solution that can preserve the baseband and keep your iPhone unlocked.

If you are confused or have any questions about redsn0w, feel free to leave us comment. But for those who are adventurous for jailbreaking, you can download Redsn0w 0.9.6 beta here.

I will keep you update about the jailbreak news for iOS 4.1. Also, once the official version of redsn0w is available, I will put up a detailed guide for the jailbreak procedures. Stay tuned.
