The new Parallels Mobile app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod is just about as close as it gets to running Windows on an iOS device. Washington-based Parallels is a champion in virtualization technologies and has pioneered the concept of running multiple operating systems on computers as well as mobile devices.

The Parallels Mobile app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch is offered complimentary with either edition of Parallels Desktop 6 and can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store.

The free Parallels Mobile app acts as a remote desktop client for your iPhone or iPad. Though the mobile app is free, it can only be used in conjunction with a computer which is running the Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac software, which lets you run Windows or Mac apps simultaneously. Although the company says that it built Parallels Mobile to cater to a growing audience which has been clamoring for an iPhone-compatible version, the free app is being used to lure customers to buy the Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac software.

Like any other remote client, Parallels Mobile uses RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) and VNC (Virtual Network Computing) protocols. You need to sign in with your Parallel account credentials on your computer as well as the iPad/ iPhone device running Parallels Mobile. Once the device is synced up, you can start using the virtual machine by tapping the “Play” button your iPad/ iPhone. Once connected, you can use the pinching multitouch gestures to zoom in and out. The app can be run in either portrait or landscape mode and even allows you to watch Flash videos on your iOS devices.

The app is a must-have for Microsoft fans who want to run Windows 7 on their iPhones and iPads. It’s fair to say that Parallels Mobile transforms Windows 7 from being a desktop operating system to a fully touch-optimized OS. IMO, the app is especially handy for professionals as they can quickly polish out a presentation or update an excel sheet using their iPhone or iPad in virtually no time.
