There’s an unbelievable buzz about the iPhone 4. Ever before it was released, comparisons were drawn between the new iPhone 4, the iPad and the iPhone 3GS in terms of “Need for Speed”. Several companies have conducted benchmark tests on the iPhone 4 and though their exact figures vary from each other, they all reveal the same thing – The new iPhone 4 is faster than the iPhone 3GS and slightly slower than the iPad.
One such test was done using the Geekbench 2 app, a popular Mac benchmark utility that’s now available on the iPhone. Since the new iPhone 4 has Apple’s A4 processor so it’s not surprising that it’s as much as 30% faster as compared to iPhone 3GS. Interestingly, the Phone 4 uses the same A4 processor as the iPad. In one of our recent posts, we’d reported about the iPhone 4 teardown which confirms that the device has 512 MB RAM and 1 GHz CPU. Therefore, it’s somewhat surprising that the iPhone 4 performs poorly as compared to the iPad.
Gizmodo compared the speed of iPhone 4 vs. iPhone 3GS for common tasks such as Notes, Calendar & Weather and the two devices perform equally well. However, when it comes to complex CPU crunching apps and high-resolution games, the iPhone 3GS is no match for iPhone 4. The report from Gizmodo suggests that it’s a touch and go race between the iPad and iPhone 4. It says that though the iPad has a “more instantaneous feel”, it’s hard to pick a winner in terms of performance. The iPhone 4 trails the iPad by a second or two in most cases.
SkatterTech did an interesting test between the new iPhone 4 (AT&T), HTC Evo 4G (Sprint) and Motorola Droid X (Verizon). The AT&T iPhone 4 connects to the web much faster than both HTC Evo 4G and Motorola Droid X.
The folks at CarryPad have published a video that compares the performance of iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G – both devices running iOS 4. As a first step, the web cache on each of the devices is cleared and then their Wi-Fi connectivity speed is compared. The results of Wi-Fi are inconclusive but when it comes to 3G connectivity, the iPhone 4 seems to be ahead of iPhone 3GS.
What’s your experience with the new iPhone 4? How fast is it? Have your say by leaving a comment here.
