Have you ever used the Photo Stream feature which comes with the iOS 5 and iCloud? In this article, I’ll walk you through the configuration and show you how to access the Photo Stream on both Windows & Mac.
First, as a reminder, you need to have iOS 5 to use the Photo Stream. The feature automatically uploads the photos in camera roll to iCloud and pushes them to your other devices such as iPad or your desktop computer. So you no longer need to manually transfer photos between devices. Just take a photo on iPhone. And all devices subscribing to the Photo Stream will automatically download the photo.
Setup Photo Stream on iPhone
By default, the Photo Stream feature is not enabled. On iPhone, go to Settings -> iCloud. If you haven’t enabled iCloud, log in with your Apple account to activate it. Then tap the “Photo Stream” option and flip the switch to ON to enable the feature.
That’s it. Now when you take photo using the Camera app, the photo will automatically upload to the Photo Stream of iCloud. Please note that only the new photos will be uploaded and the upload will only happen when your device is connected to Wi-Fi.
Access Photo Stream on Mac
To access Photo Stream on Mac, you’ll need iPhoto v9.2 or up. Like Photo Stream on iPhone, the feature is not enabled by default. So open iPhoto and select “Preferences” option in the menu bar.
In Preferences, select “Photo Stream” and click “Enable Photo Stream” to activate it. Make sure you’ll select “Automatic Import” if you want iPhoto to import all photos from Photo Stream to your photo library.
Now simply click the “Photo Stream” button on the left pane to access it. For the first time use, it may take some time for iPhoto to download all photos from iCloud.
Access Photo Stream on Windows
For Windows user, iCloud only supports Windows 7 and Vista (with service pack 2). To access Photo Stream, you’ll need to first download and install iCloud Control Panel.
Once installed, open Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> iCloud. Login with your Apple ID to access iCloud.
In the iCloud Control Panel, make sure “Photo Stream” is enabled. By default, all your photos in Photo Stream will be downloaded and saved into “My Photo Stream” folder under Pictures. If you want to change it to other folder, click “Option” button next to Photo Stream option and set it to your preferred folder.
Click “Apply” button to enable Photo Stream. Just wait for a few minutes and you’ll see photos coming into the “My Photo Stream” folder.
