Noteshelf LogoI have been using Penultimate to do my scribbling on the iPad.  However, after trying out Noteshelf for the last few weeks, I am thinking that this is fast becoming my go-to App for writing on the iPad.

I have a habit of writing (scribbling) down my notes and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the iPad for its handwriting programs.  Noteshelf’s interface is pretty crisp and works well with the OZAKI stylus.  The App opens up to a Bookshelf screen (hence the name) where you can create multiple notebooks. Notebooks can have multiple pages, layouts, paper styles, and Book covers to suit your fancy.

Writing itself was quite pleasant, with customizable tip size and colors.  You can also import images onto a page and moving between pages is easy with a tap on the page Tab on the top right hand of the page.

What really makes this App stands out for me is the Wrist protection features, Zoom function, and external Integration.

Wrist Protection

Writing on the iPad on most other Apps invariably ended up with my wrist resting on the screen and causing marks on the page.  Noteshelf’s Wrist protection feature gives you an area which you can place your wrist to avoid those unintended doodles.  The area that disregards the wrist can be adjusted by a scrollable tab on the side on the page.

Zoom

This is something you will love or hate.  Most writing Apps don’t have a lot of real estate for you to write on.  This is understandable as the stylus is large and the page is small.  With zoom, you have an enlarged window to write on and your letters shrink to fit onto the lines, thus making full use of the virtual paper.

Integration

A problem I had while writing notes on Penultimate was that I had to keep referring to the iPad to see my notes.  Noteshelf allows you to export to Dropbox or Evernote (all available for free) as PDF or image files.  This is perfect if you want to refer to your notes from any other device other than your iPad.

Summary

Noteshelf is a great app for writing and scribbling.  It’s features allow for great customization and adds to a respectable writing experience.  Other features such as cut and paste adds a little kick to editing your notes.  Allowing you to export your notebooks to Evernote or Dropbox was an extra thoughtful feature.  All in, I see more great stuff coming from these guys.
