Video Time Machine for iPhoneThe App Store is just amazing at churning out some impressive Apps.  Video Time Machine is a testament to that.  Created by the same guys that gave us YouTube Time Machine (YYTM), Video Time Machine is a curation of over 10,000 selected videos – from 1860 to 2011.

You can watch specific categories including TV, Music, Advertisements, Trailers, Video Games, Sports, and so much more.  As with quite a lot of good Apps, Video Time Machine has a simple interface.  You get to select the year and category of what you want to watch with a rolling Tab on the top right of the screen.

If specifying the year or category is not your thing, there is a “Random” button to bring you a collection of nostalgic videos. This option selects a random video out of the App’s index.

There is a Right and Left arrow button for you to flip thru the videos and finally sharing options to share these videos on Twitter or Facebook.

This is What I liked about it

Personally, watching videos on this App really unleashed a torrent of nostalgia in me.  Watching the Bubble Yum commercial with “flavors that last THAT long” brought me back to those days when something so simple meant so much.  Back then, there was only one TV and we all had some great bonding moments surrounding the only TV in the home.

Then there is the trailer from “007: The spy that loved me” – I remember how my mom brought my brother and I to watch the movie and locked the keys in the car while she ran into the cinema with us to buy advance tickets.  I cannot remember how it turned out but being a parent now, I kind of appreciate the hassle she took on to bring us out.

ABCs Wide World of Sports was the weekly highlight to view sports snippets from all over the world then.  Today we are inundated with sports channels and even with the High definition videos that come across, I don’t think it’s as exciting as it was back then.

In Closing

For those of you that are old enough, download this App.  As it’s name suggests, be prepared to be transported to an earlier and simpler time, I trust you will experience those warm fuzzy feelings as I did.

For you younger folks out there, videos like these document a piece of our social fabric.  Take a glimpse at what we looked at before and see how it has shaped us to become what we are as a society today.

Video Time Machine is a universal App and is available for $1.99
