Nicholas Allegra, otherwise known as comex, is the boy genius behind the web-based iOS hacker app JailbreakMe. Plenty of iOS jailbreaks exist, such as redsn0w and Blackra1n, but none are as seamlessly presented to the public via an easily-accessible website like the one devised by Allegra/comex. The underground achievement of JailbreakMe and JailbreakMe 2.0 is a testament to the ingenious implications of cloud computing; simplicity, user-friendliness, and software immortality.
It’s also what landed Allegra an internship with Apple Computer.
JailbreakMe takes advantages of flaws that are inherent in the iOS Safari browser. Through techniques only know to a handful of black hat geniuses and comex himself, the tool grants users the ability to manipulate the otherwise untouchable iOS by-way of remotely downloaded custom kernels. This is leaps and bounds from the traditional need for a desktop computer to house the software necessary for jailbreaking.
Apple’s iOS 5 is going to rely on cloud technology more than any previous incarnation of the iPhone operating system. They want to make sure they have every bug in their cloud structure figured out, ergo Allegra’s internship.
Allegra recently participated in an impromptu interview on the popular online information source reddit.com. There he was asked by users what he thought about Apple’s reputation for basically “buying” out the ideas of jailbreakers to implement in their devices. He was also asked about his personal motivations regarding jailbreaking and accepting the Apple internship.
Allegra’s replies revealed that the brain behind the most revolutionary method of jailbreaking holds no particular opinion about the rights and wrongs of software hacking or the corporate integration of hacking achievements. He viewed jailbreaking the iPhone operating system as a challenge, the internship as the next challenge, and the use of jailbreaking breakthroughs as a natural and expected effect of the activities he engages in.
One thing is for certain and that is Apple knows where the talent is to be found. They always say “If you can’t beat them, join them.” In this case it’s more like “If you can’t beat them, make them join you.”
