There’s nothing more refreshing than sipping through your coffee in a Starbucks outlet and not having to worry about making a cash or credit card payment. Let your iPhone or iPod Touch (or Blackberry) take care of the bill while you focus on the soothing taste of your favorite coffee.

The Starbucks Card Mobile payment pilot program received an encouraging response from customers in Seattle, North Carolina and San Francisco and the coffee giant has now extended it to nearly 300 locations in New York City and two Long Island counties. Making a payment using the Starbucks Card Mobile payment system is simple – just hold up the 2-D barcode on your iPhone to the scanner at the counter and you’re done!

To use, iPhone -customers can download the free Starbucks Card Mobile App from the Apple App Store. It is interesting to note that nearly 71 percent of Starbucks smartphone-carrying customers either use the iPhone or Blackberry so it’s obvious that the company decided to launch an app for these devices. Once you download the app, your iPhone becomes your virtual prepaid Starbucks debit card. Simply swipe the barcode there at the store to pay for your order. Refilling your virtual card is easy and can be done either through your mobile device or online. What’s more, the app uses GPS capabilities to help you find the nearest Starbucks to your current location and whether it accepts mobile payments or not.

The Starbucks Card App has five key features – Check Starbucks Card balance; Reload Starbucks Card account with any major credit card; Pay for Starbucks purchases using the mobile payment feature; Find nearby Starbucks stores with a store locator feature; and Check My Starbucks Rewards status.

Starbucks recently teamed up with Apple to launch the Starbucks Digital Network, an in-store multimedia platform which provides entertainment channel featuring select music and video titles via iTunes as well as the digital version of the two-year-old iTunes Pick of the Week card program, offering a free new song or music video each week to Starbucks customers.

Starbucks already holds the coveted distinction of being the world’s best coffee chain and with the launch of the Starbucks Card Mobile payment, it’s now the most tech-savvy coffee chain as well. Have you used the Starbucks Card Mobile app yet? If so, did you like it? Please share your feedback by leaving a comment below this post.
