There is little doubt that the Apple iPad is a true game-changer. And now, it’s all set to re-write the rules of the newspaper industry with the introduction of ‘The Daily’, a digital newspaper designed exclusively for the iPad with no print and web counterparts. It is believed that Apple and News Corp have invested nearly 30 million dollars into ’The Daily’ and are in the process of hiring around 100 journalists to create custom content for the publication that will feature rich media optimized to take advantage of digital platforms.
This is fantastic news for all news addicts (including myself). Read on to know more about ‘The Daily’ – the world’s first digital “newspaper” designed exclusively for the iPad.
Apple and News Corp have not announced a formal launch date for the iPad newspaper but it’s expected to be available “early next year”. The newspaper will cost 99 cents for a week’s subscription. Daily aims to bring “a tabloid sensibility with broadsheet intelligence” to the iPad, and would soon be extended to tablets on other platforms.
There are a number of newspaper apps currently available for the iPad including NYTimes, DigitalPost, AP News and several others. While they have been popular, it would be a long-shot to call these ‘game-changer’ applications. Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch working together is perhaps the best ever pairing of technology and media world, therefore the expectations from ‘The Daily’ are understandably very high. It is believed that the iPad would have sold hundred million units in the next two years, so there’s definitely a good business case to launch an iPad-only newspaper sooner than later.
Priced at 99 cents a week, it looks to be a good deal. Of course, time will tell if ‘The Daily’ plans to live up to its pre-launch media hype and attention. I, for one, hope it does. Are you fond of reading the newspaper every day? If so, would you be interested in trying out the iPad-only newspaper? Can it compete with the print-editions of newspapers? Long live the newspaper!
