When it comes to gaming, it doesn’t get any bigger than the iconic game designer – John Carmack. At QuakeCon in Dallas, he gave a sneak peak into Id Software latest offering, an iPhone version of Rage. The company also announced that the official release date for Rage on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC as September 12, 2011. Running at an astonishing 60 FPS on the iPhone 4, Rage was by far the highlight of QuakeCon. Carmack & his team says that Rage will run “just as well” on the original 2G iPhone and the iPad.
Carmack admitted that the lack of buttons on iPhone hampers the gaming experience but promises that his company is well prepared to redefine mobile gaming with iPhone-based Rage. Id Software plans to release a miniature version of Rage later this year and the full-blown version next year. The demo received rave audience reviews at QuakeCon thanks to the impressive texturing, stunning visual effects and the miraculous speed of 60 frames per second. The spellbound audience whooped and applauded when the highly detailed images of Rage were broadcast on the big screen.
IMO, the Rage demo should be a lesson for Steve Jobs & co. about the gaming potential of iPhone 4. Carmack believes that “it can kill anything on a previous generation console — a PS2 or an Xbox” and I wholeheartedly agree with him. The iPhone 4 has a PowerVR SGX535 graphics chip that’s capable of handling 28 million triangles per second. If Apple replaces it with PowerVR SGX540, it has the potential to scale up to a mamoth 90 million triangles per second – a gamer’s wildest dream come true. The PS3 supports 250 million triangles per second and the Xbox 360 supports 500 million triangles per second.
Going by the immense buzz of iPhone Rage demo, speculations are that Id Software might even be invited on stage to share iOS based game at the next iOS 5.0 update sneak peak. Here’s a video of the Rage on iPhone demo in action. Sit back and enjoy!
