Apple holds the credit for revolutionizing the smartphone and tablet segments with the iPhone and the iPad respectively. So, the next logical step would be to look beyond these segments and try its hand on other consumer electronics. And if the recent rumors are to be believed, Apple is all set to change the game in the TV segment with its new offering – an iOS-powered connected Television. What’s more, Apple’s iOS TV could be launched as early as this fall. To say that “Steve Jobs & co.” never cease to amaze me would be a gross understatement.
DailyTech quotes a former Apple executive, speaking anonymously, that Apple plans to “blow Netflix and all those other guys away” by bundling Apple TV + iTunes inside physical television sets. It is speculated that Apple plans to team up with an existing manufacturer (most likely, Samsung) to provide televisions that would be branded under the Apple name.
To be honest, rumors of an Apple-branded television aren’t a new phenomenon. Steve Jobs has always projected ‘Apple TV’ to be a hobby project rather than a breakthrough innovation. In the past, several analysts have predicted that Apple perusing TV business is a question of “when” rather than “if”. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster believes iOS-powered Televisions could potentially be the next million-dollar business for Apple. He expects Apple to earn $2.6 billion in revenue in 2012 just from selling TVs.
On the other hand, several experts believe Apple doesn’t need to make a television set. They reason that TVs tend to be high cost, long shelf life and low margins while Apple’s USP is products with a shorter lifespan. I, for one, don’t buy that argument.
According to the rumored source, “You’ll go into an Apple retail store and be able to walk out with a TV. It’s perfect.” Knowing Apple, nothing short of perfect would do.
