Any roster of iPhone applications will never be complete without a medieval-set adventure game. In the case of Creature and Castles, the thrilling sword fights and daring rescue-the-princess missions are replaced with taking the treasure and escaping hordes of enemies, who are hunting you down. This application, in truth, is more of a puzzle-type adventure game rather than a mano-a-mano button masher.

Creature and Castles comes off as an old-school game, with the main character running around to nab the treasure, which is strategically placed on each map. The same goes with exit points. To make matters complicated, traps and obstacles are found throughout a map, and increase in number as you progress through the game. Apart from such, enemies will chase you down. Making contact with them means losing a life, so avoid them at all costs.

What makes Creature and Castles unique is its scoring system. Your goal is to take the least amount of steps possible to grab the treasure and make your escape. The fewer steps taken, the higher the score. Your score also drops once you stop moving, so nabbing the treasure and escaping is ideally done with continuous movement.

Surprisingly, with the numerous challenges a player faces, the game isn’t too hard, if you’re not really aiming for a very high score. All you have to do is scope the map and predict the enemies’ movements to complete a level. However, if you aim to get a huge score, which is marked by shields, much precision is required, and of course, hours of playing.

On the graphical aspect, you’ll be delighted to nicely detailed realms and sprites. The visuals add to the game’s overall fun factor, making a lot of players play the game repeatedly. The controls are also responsive, so evading the traps and enemies shouldn’t be too hard for those who have nimble fingers.

Creature and Castles, overall, isn’t the best medieval action adventure game available for download. However, it is no slouch, given its fantastic graphics and exciting game play. Getting hooked to it is automatic, and outwitting the A.I. should capture the fancy of iPhone users.

This award-winning application works with iPod Touch (third and fourth gen.), iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 as well as the iPad. Your platform should run on iOS 3.0 or later versions. To download, just click here.
