Photo Academy for iPhoneMy friend Bonnie bought a DSLR Camera and hardly knows how to use most of its features.  In my quest to find out what most of the features were, I stumbled upon “Photo Academy”, a photography encyclopedia of sorts which I think is really helpful.

So What’s Photo Academy?

The App covers the basics like how to hold your camera to the effects of adjusting ISO and exposure settings. There are hundreds of tips on using the ideal camera settings to maximize your pictures, great for beginners like me.  Starting with Photo 101, Explanations are offered for the differences between compact cameras and DSLRs along with basic tips and tricks.

There are more detailed explanations on analysis of exposure modes, all camera settings, composition advice and equipment explanations. Information is also provided on the importance of depth of field, the histogram, why RAW format is used rather than JPEG and even a section on photo editing afterwards.

Expanding on this – the “How to” section covers every combination of subjects that can be photographed. Everything from aquarium situations, safaris, babies, candid shots, cityscapes, festivals, food, disabled sports, extreme sports and macro photography of flowers is covered.  This includes general tips, appropriate camera settings to use, relevant equipment, lighting tips, and creativity tips.  There is also a gallery of images, which was a collage of well taken shots.

Finally, there is a section called Shoot Diary.  Here users can record their latest photos along with notes, the date, location and weather conditions.  Here you can have a journal your photography experience and watch it improve.

Summary

The reason why you start the young on hobbies is because they have the time to indulge in finding a pastime and submerge themselves in whatever suits them.  Unfortunately for me, managing a young family along with some of my other pet projects have made such time scarce.

However, it is Apps like Photo Academy that can really help make sense of basic Photography concepts easily.  The alternatives of doing more research or joining a class would simply be too time consuming.

Photo Academy is available on App Store for $2.99. It supports iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 4.0 or up.
