Earlier, we have covered Snapseed, a great photo editing app for iPhone. The only downside is it costs you $4.99.
Today, we’ll review another photo editing app for iPhone and iPad that comes from the maker of the well-known animation software – Autodesk Maya ad 3DStudio Max. Sounds exciting, isn’t it? What’s more interesting is that the app is equally impressive and free. The name of this app is Pixlr-o-matic. Now comes the question, does this app have enough potential to alter the all-famous Instagram – an photo editing and sharing service which now has more than 10 million users to back its success. Let’s find this out the hands on way.
Just as you would want the app to start up, Pixlr-o-matic gives you two options in the very beginning, the home screen that is – to take a new Snapshot through your iPhone/iPad’s camera or to start editing a photo from your gallery through the Upload button.
Like many other apps that make use of iPhone’s gallery, Pixlr-o-matic makes use of the gallery function, presenting a grid of all your photos to select one from, and then you get to do the editing – the same place where you are led to, after taking a snap using the snapshot feature. The editing environment provides you with three different tabs, one back (undo) button and a save button. The first tab after the back button lets you change the tones, mood and give color effects and surreal shades to your photo – very much like Instagram. The next tab, having the bulb symbol, gives the added effects! These effects can range from disco spot lights, drama effects to grunge look and sparkle. The next tab, the last before the save option, lets you select a frame for your photo, from a range of wonderfully creative frames such as flowery ones.
Once you’re done with editing, you can either share the photo on your phone, as an added image, keeping the original image intact, or send it to your Dropbox, iTunes or even Flickr profile. You can also email the photo to anyone you want, apart from the option to share it on Facebook, imm.io etc.
To speculate this app as an Instagram killer would be pre-mature, but to say the least being honest, do give it a try ’cause it atleast has all what Instagram has and we found it to be a must-try.
Pixlr-o-matic for iPhone/iPad is FREE of cost and you can download it from the iTunes App Store here.
