One of my friends has jailbroken his iPhone for a long time. Everything works fine. He loves jailbreaking and tries out all kinds of cydia tweaks. But one thing that annoys him is that there are four empty icons showing on the home screen. He can delete the icons and remove them from home screen. However, every time when the home screen is re-spring or after the iPhone is synced, those icons show up again. These icons do not harm the system but it’s really annoying and make the home screen cluttered.
Do you experience the same problem? If you’re looking for solution, this is a step-by-step guide to show you how to delete those blank icons.
So, what’re these icons? Actually they’re empty web clips. I have no idea why they come up but here is the solution to delete these useless icons.
1. First, your iPhone should be jailbroken. Otherwise, you can’t access the required folder to remove the web clips.
2. Download iExplorer. It’s an application that lets you access the file system of iPhone from computer. The software is free for download and available on both Mac and Windows.
3. Connect your iPhone to computer via USB and launch iExplorer.
4. Once connected, iExplorer recognizes your iPhone and displays the system folders. Go to /private/var/mobile/Library/WebClips. You’ll find several subfolders under the WebClips folder just like the figure below. Each subfolder represents a web clip on your home screen. So your number of subfolders may be different from mine.
5. So how do you determine which subfolder refers to the empty web clip? Just navigate to the subfolder and click on the “icon.png”. iExplorer offers a great feature so you can preview the icon. If it’s a normal web clip, the icon should be displayed correctly like the figure below.
If it’s a empty web clip, the icon is displayed blank and this is the subfolder you’re going to delete.
6. In my case, the following 4 folders contain the empty icons (i.e. empty web clips). Highlight the folders, right-click and select “Delete” to remove them.
7. Finally, reboot your iPhone.
That’s it. Once rebooted, all the empty icons should be removed.
