Mega Recorder+Though I love my iPhone, I’m not a big fan of Apple’s built-in voice recorder app. In fact, after having used sophisticated recording apps such as Vox Studio and Awave Audio on my PC, using the iPhone voice recorder simply sucks. Therefore, I’ve been scanning the App Store for feature rich voice recording apps for the iPhone and I recently stumbled across Mega Recorder +.

How the App Works

Once installed, the app shows a listing of your existing recordings. You can add or delete recordings by clicking on the respective buttons.

The app lets you sort the recordings by date, length, name or priority. I like the concept of priority especially as it lets me determine which recordings I want to see on the top of the list.

A note to the Mega Recorder + app developer – it should be ‘Length’ not ‘Lenght’.

The Settings tab lets you choose a large number of configuration parameters related to recordings. These include audio quality (low 8 kHz, Good 22 kHz, Best 44.1 kHz), audio format (AIFF, WAV, AIFC, CAF) and auto pause threshold duration. You can also choose to turn of the beeps during the recordings.

While such advanced audio configuration options are common for desktop tools, I’ve never seen any other iPhone app offer such capabilities. So, on the feature richness scale, the Mega Recorder + app scores a thumbs up. The ‘Create Recording’ screen is equally advanced and lets you choose a variety of parameters such as Play Speed, Repeat Flag etc. You can pause/ stop recordings, move them to Trash, cut and rewrite your recordings.

Once you start a recording, the Record button toggles state to ‘Stop Recording’ as shown below.

I tested the audio quality on all 4 formats – AIFF, WAV, CAF ,AIFC and it sounded pretty good. All in all, Mega Recorder + is a comprehensive
voice recorder for the iPhone with lots of unmatched capabilities.

Great App but…

My only major concern is that Mega Recorder+ is so advanced that there’s a learning curve involved in getting used to the user interface and various features. Secondly, the support site is part Russian and part English. It would be nice to have 2 separate Support pages – one for each language.

Priced at 99 cents, Mega Recorder+ is great value for money for people looking for a sophisticated voice recording app for their iPhone.
